18th Neglected Tropical Disease -- Chromomycosis

This past week the World Health Organization agreed to class the disease chromomycosis as a Neglected Tropical Disease. This after years of lobbying by the group GAFFI, based in Geneva.

Recognition from the WHO is important for a variety of reasons.

First, it allows a more concentrated effort to help eliminate the disfiguring disease.

Second, the NTD team at WHO brings to bear a considerable skillset in managing, controlling, and helping to eliminate disease in tropical conditions. More resources can't hurt, right?

And lastly, international recognition brings more opportunity for funding and more funding means a better chance at controlling this condition.
